PANDURI | The First Chapter of Georgian Cinematic Sound

About Panduri

When we started Kostava Creative, the Panduri was the obvious first step. It’s an instrument with an incredibly distinct character, but bringing that character into a digital environment without losing its physical, raw feel was a massive challenge.

Acoustic instruments from the Caucasus are notoriously hard to sample because their entire charm lies in their organic imperfections. If you clean them up too much, they end up sounding like plastic MIDI guitars. So, we kept the dirt. We spent weeks figuring out the exact microphone placement to capture the sharp, percussive attack of the strings and the hollow resonance of the carved wooden body.

Every fret buzz, pick scrape, and subtle release noise was recorded and mapped across multiple velocity layers and round robins. When you play it on a keyboard, it doesn't sound like a static loop—it reacts with the natural inconsistency of a real human performance. Sonically, the Panduri has a very specific mid-range that naturally cuts through a mix. You can drop it over a heavy electronic beat without needing aggressive EQ, or use it as a raw, driving texture in a cinematic score.

And this is just the first model. The Panduri comes in various shapes, sizes, and regional tunings across Georgia. We are actively recording different physical instruments, and these new variations will be rolled out as preset updates in the future, continually expanding the library.
